Right Place Wrong Time

From the iconic first notes, “Right Place, Wrong Time” was destined to be a hit for Dr. John. The track from his Allen Toussaint-produced sixth album, In the Right Place, was released in 1973 and over the summer became a top 10 on Billboard Hot 100. Some of the lines were contributed by Dr. John’s fellow rock stars including Bob Dylan and Bette Midler. One line (“Just need a little brain salad surgery / got to cure my insecurity”) was the inspiration for the title of the album Brain Salad Surgery by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

Dr. John’s hit “Right Place, Wrong Time” has been featured in television shows from American Horror Story to That ‘70s Show, and featured in movies including Sahara and Lucky Numbers, as well as the trailers for Poker Face. The newest version is part of a release from the Estate and MIG (Made in Germany Music): Dr. John Live at Rockpalast 1999 CD / DVD Box Set (out 3/27/26) features his New Orleans band Bobby Broom, David Barard and Herman “Roscoe” Ernest at the height of their powers.

Right Place, Wrong Time continues to be a cultural juggernaut across all generations, and Dr. John’s most streamed single, gaining millions of listens over 5 decades since its creation.
